SHOHEI KATAYAMA
CASCADE
“In every reflection upon water, there is a lesson about fluidity, adaptability, and the art of finding peace amidst change.”
Cascade, seeks to embody the fluid movement and energy of cascading water, while evoking the sense of peace and tranquility found in its continuous flow—constantly moving forward, never stagnant. Drawing inspiration from the natural movements in Pittsburgh, Katayama focused on waterfalls, specifically referencing the local Jackson Falls and Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, in response to the vertical space provided in the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh's cafeteria.
The installation emphasizes the concept of ebb and flow, symbolizing the twists, turns, and ups and downs that characterize life's journey. Just as a river navigates through landscapes to eventually reach the sea, Katayama suggests that we too can be flexible and adaptable, shaping our paths toward peace and understanding despite the challenges and obstacles we encounter.
Cascade is designed to offer a meditative, almost sublime experience, akin to the healing effect of gazing at a body of water. By allowing the eyes to be captivated by the movement of light within the piece, Katayama hopes to inspire viewers to find their own sense of purpose and direction, and to embrace the journey of life with all its natural ebbs and flows.
